mother of Trinity

Skills/Training "Report Card"

Overall Health:

A

1/15/10: Both clydesdale mares have just arrived. We are told they are current on all shots and vaccinations and neither has any health issues. Lady allowed us to do some very minor clipping of broken pieces of hoof wall without lifting her feet; all 4 will need additional care.
Both mares have dried debris stuck in their coats which will take a while to remove, but no signs of sores or skin irritation.
Lady arrived very mildly underweight, a body score of approximately 4, but overall in good health.
04/15/10: Lady has had basic trims done on her hooves, is nearly up to a perfect weight, is fit, healthy and happy! She still needs dental work -- we're just waiting for our turn on the vet's schedule.
5/12/10: Lady was excellent for her dental work, and doc gave her a clean bill of health in all areas.

Ground Manners:

A

Jan 2010: Lady arrived more nervous than Trinity, particularly around men. She is still very managable, but she is more cautious and less willing to be caught. She is settling into our routine, and is learning to lead quietly and respectfully, giving her handler personal space and not rushing.  She is sweet, but more timid than Trinity, and it seems to be a part of her base personality. We spoke with the breeder who raised her, and she indicates Lady has always been more timid and worried than most.  She was initially afraid to let us hold and trim either front hoof, but we got the worst edges cleaned off with the hoof on the ground during her first week. As of April, she is lifting and holding her front hooves easily, and will soon get a thorough trim instead of just minor nips as we've done so far. She was exceptionally good for the vet drawing blood on her first day in a new place.

April 2010: Lady's ground manners are much improved. She is comfortable in her surroundings and with what is expected of her. She is easy to manage and respectful, and careful with her feet. She lifts her front hooves very well now, and is learning to manage her rears.

5/16/2010: Lady is making progress by leaps and bounds. Her ground manners are very, very good now. She is easily managed even by timid new volunteers with no horse experience.

Basic Riding Skills:

B

Lady had no prior training.
April 21, 2010: Lady has successfully completed her first ride!!! enjoy the YouTube video of this beautiful mare taking great strides forward, and beginning her riding career with confidence! Enjoy the video!!
May 5, 2010 NEW VIDEO!
May 7, 2010: Lady has approximately 15 rides now:
  • Lady walks and trots, halts and backs respectfully in the indoor arena.
  • Lady stands to be mounted and dismounted without difficulty.
  • Lady can easily figure-8 inside the small arena at a walk, and is managing to negotiate those turns at a trot but needs support.
  • Lady has cantered outdoors under saddle twice, in an open space without fences.
  • Lady rides easily walk/trot in the open fields around our property.
  • Lady has ridden on a 4+ mile trail ride outside of our farm, including leading, allowing another horse cantering away and out of sight.
  • Lady's confidence has really blossomed, and it is likely she will settle in to become a great partner for an early intermediate and above rider.
May 16, 2010: Lady has made another HUGE leap forward in her riding skills:
  • Today Lady competed in a mounted orienteering event (www.nacmo.org), at MiddleFork State Park!
  • Lady rode over and through unfamiliar streams and ditches.
  • Lady easily rode by strange horses without argument.
  • Lady allowed strange horses to approach and pass, or stop and visit, without concern.
  • Lady allowed Memphis and Sally -- her horsey partners in this contest - to canter away from her, while she maintained the speed asked by her rider without conflict.
  • Lady completed her first canters under saddle!
  • Lady stood without pressure on numerous occasions, allowing her rider to read maps, use a compass, dismount to check out markers, and other key steps of this type of competition, all without any frustration or concern.
  • Lady earned compliments from several other riders, who were surprised to see a full size registered Clyde show as much energy and "go" as Lady did at this event; it was also commented how great her manners were for a 'first timer'. They were even more surprised to hear it was her first trail ride anywhere other than her "home turf' around the farm!

Ideal Career

She is a beautiful mare with a narrower stance and smaller hooves than Tessa but a similar, if mildly toned down, presence.
As of April 1, 2010, Lady is working well in the round pen, with an easy walk, trot, canter and reverse now. She is doing ok through basic despooking training, but hasn't yet reached the trust point where she accepts something new because we tell her it is ok, without her having to work through it herself.
April 21, 2010: Lady has passed that barrier now, and trusts her handlers to tell her things are OK, without her having to decide for herself. She did amazingly well through her first ride, keeping a calm head and being patient with her humans!
May 10, 2010: Lady has shown herself to truly enjoy riding outdoors, and likes trail riding. She has very nice natural gaits and would do well in a broad range of careers. She isn't so broad chested as a typically pulling clydesdale, but would certainly look very sharp pulling a doctors cart or similar lighter carriage. She rides easily already, and would likely be a great riding mount, whether simply as an 'at home arena' horse, doing regular trail work, or receiving more education to move her into competitive careers such as competitive trail, hunter under saddle, and similar.
May 16, 2010 -- six days later -- and Lady has shown herself as capable as any seasoned competitor while working at a Mounted Orienteering competition! (scavenger hunt in the woods on horseback) Lady showed a level head, great energy without being high strung or difficult to manage.

Stall Manners

B

Ladyy seems to have spent time stalled previously. She walks in easily, expects feed to appear in the trough, and waits to be lead out of the stall. During her first week, she did remain stalled, calmly, while Trinity worked in the indoor roundpen (in sight of her).
We then moved them to the main herd, and they now come in separately or together, with little concern either way. Trinity can leave and go outside without Lady, or Lady comes in without Trinity at all, and does fine.

Trailering Skills:

A+++

We essentially had to get out of lady's way as she put herself on, then when we got home easily got herself off the trailer! She was clearly an old pro and handled this task with ease.

Companionship / Pasture Manners

B+

Trinity and Lady began by staying in Cheveyo's memorial paddock and roundpen as we get them acclamated to our farm. They are companionable together and share hay. Lady was more timid than Trinity at this stage and not as easily caught. We expect her to settle into the main pasture with the large herd easily.
After a few weeks, we moved them to the main pasture. Lady learned the routine and comes to the gait like an old pro. She is now easily caught but still a little timid about hands around her face. She does great with the other horses, is fairly low on the pecking order but doesn't get chased from the hay or the gait. She is often in the first group who hurry to the gait and get in before the dominant horses arrive.

Manageability for Routine and Medical Care

B

Jan 2010, We were VERY pleasantly surprised that Lady was very managable with needles, and also that she did let us trim those rough pieces on the ground on both front hooves. She will soon begin hoof handling lessons so we can trim her completely. She was fine for worming.
As of April 2010, she has made good progress with her hooves and is now ready for an indepth trim, instead of simply cleaning off small issues.
May 2010 Lady has had a full trim of all 4 hooves, and also was exceptional for the vet to do her spring dental work.
Adoption Terms 6/15/10 update: ADOPTION IN PROCESS!!

Lady is a beautiful, well built, well bred, registered clydesdale mare who has never been mistreated and who is a wonderful size, particularly for riding. She has a great temperament and a great riding foundation being laid at this time. Lady's adoption fee as of 5/14/2010 is $2,500, includes the ground school training she has already received ($500 value), plus the now completed initial 30 days riding training (also $500 value). If an adopter wishes, we will add an additional 30 days training in their area of interest for a discounted rate of $250.00.

As her training progresses, her fees may be adjusted accordingly.

Please see our AdoptionQnA pages for details of how to adopt.

Overview: Lady's family had significant long term medical issues that have made it that they could no longer keep her or her pasture mates. We are unsure of her history, but confirmed she is Trinity's mother. She shows no sign of having ever been mistreated, but is a little timid with people, particularly men. She is quickly learning our routine and what we expect from her, particularly maintaining personal space and paying attention when being led. She is attached to Trinity but not obsessive or panicky when they are separated.

HISTORY:

April 2010: Lady has made wonderful progress on simple basics. She is easy to lead and manage, and is polite and respectful -- if a little distant -- with humans. She remains mildly timid around new people, particularly men. She is working wonderfully in the round pen, and has found a friend and trusted leader in one of our volunteers, Tammy. Lady will handle new despooking objects more easily with Tammy nearby as her 'safety blanket'. She is gaining weight at a nice steady rate, and we are still hopeful she may broaden across her back as she fill in her weight and build top line muscle.

The 2 profile photos, above, were taken April 10, 2010. We had not yet gotten all the heavy debris off her underbelly, but the rest of her body is clean but for 'normal mud'. In late April, while shedding she easily lost the rest of the heavy debris and is clean and happy!

May 1, 2010: LADY IS RIDING! and doing wonderfully. Enjoy the first ride video!! Then also enjoy the 2nd footage -- As of 5/1, she has had approximately 10 rides, including 4 different riders. She is trotting confidently, indoors and out, including trotting out through open fields without fences, which she seemed to truly enjoy.

May 16, 2010: Lady competed today in an Mounted Orienteering (www.nacmo.org) -- scavenger hunt on horseback -- and competed like an old pro!! She cantered easily, allowed her companions to gallop away without fussing; allowed strange horses to ride up and pass, and rode up on, passed, or rode with strange horses without concern. She handled river crossings, steep banks and more without concern. She stood with a lax rein while her rider read maps and compasses, and for dismounts and remounts to try to read markings and other conditions.

June 26, 2010: We are SOOO excited for Lady! She is going home to a young lady in Texas. We are so excited for Lady, and for Alexandria!

She now has a feed sponsor. The feed sponsor donates to cover the cost of her feed monthly -- $50 per month at this time.

She also needs a medical sponsor. The initial vet intake cost approximately $125.
