Skills/Training "Report Card"

Overall Health:

D

  • Ennapay is a well built, well muscled mustang. She has a broad chest, solid legs, and good conformation.
  • She has a great hair coat, and gorgeous mane and tail.
  • Ennapay has struggled with what we believed were digestive problems since her arrival in January 09. She was treated for sand ingestion, then for ulcer-type symptoms.
  • Finally, in August 2009, Ennapay was diagnosed as having a rib which was already broken when she arrived back in January. She is "laid off", on pasture rest, at least until summer 2010.

Ground Manners:

A

  • Ennapay has very nice ground manners. She offers her halter, leads wonderfully, stops when asked.
  • She doesn't mind traffic or dogs.
  • She isn't nervous around cars, tractors, or traffic.

Basic Riding Skills:

C

  • Ennapay had a FANTASTIC start under saddle before her pain reached the point where she could not ride, approximately 6 weeks prior to the competition.
  • Ennapay has excellent balance for a horse who has less than 20 rides.
  • Ennapay stands nicely for mounting, walks with ease, steers well.
  • She has done only limited trotting under saddle and no cantering yet due to her ulcer.
  • Ennapay will not return to riding training until the vets declare the painful rib injury fully healed.

Ideal Career

Ennapay has not had a chance to ride enough to have shown us her ideal career path. However, she has enjoyed trail riding outdoors, has enjoyed the early balance and dressage-like lessons shown her. She really has enjoyed anything asked of her so long as she is not in pain. She would likely succeed in any of several disciplines.

Stall Manners

B

  • Stalls easily, but is ready to return to the pasture once her feed is finished.
  • Mildly edgy if left alone in the barn (no other horses) for more than 5-10 minutes, but doesn't panic.
  • Waits to be led out when the door is opened.
  • Eats easily, doesn't pace, crib or stall walk..

Trailering Skills:

B

  • Loads easily.
  • Has trailered few times, rides quietly, has never been trailered alone.
  • Unloads well, ready to get down but backs off smoothly.

Companionship / Pasture Manners

B+

  • Ennapay is a leader but not the top alpha in our large herd.
  • She is patient with other horses, and not aggressive
  • She has never shown signs of being herd bound.
  • Comes when called, easy to catch, enjoys people and attention.

Manageability for Routine and Medical Care

B

  • Farrier: C. Lifts front hooves great but nervous about being on the stand; lifts rears nicely but very tense about being on the stand.
  • Shots: B. No fuss! Stands with reasonable manners for vaccinations.
  • Dental: NA.
  • Worming: A. No fuss, doesn't pull away, doesn't spit it out or drop or wipe it on handlers.
  • Grooming: B. Good for brushing and hoof cleaning, but gets mildly impatient.
  • Ears -- B, not crazy about having her ears handled but doesn't fight.
  • Clipping -- NA.
  • Bathing -- NA, we've not tried.
  • Tying: C. Has only had limited experience tying.
adoption terms Ennapay was adopted from the BLM by CWER to allow her to live out her next year here at CWER. She would only be adopted during this year to someone who wished to keep her as a pasture companion. Otherwise, she is not eligible to leave CWER until she has healed and is again riding happily.

Overview: Ennapay is a beautiful, well built, powerful mustang mare who has had what were believed to be digestive problems since her arrival. When she was not in pain, she was incredibly easy to work with, eager to please, smart, curious, a pure joy to work around. In August, 09, that pain was rediagnosed as being a broken rib (photo below). Ribs take roughly 1-3 years to heal, with little we can do to speed the process for her. She is comfortable and pasture sound.

HISTORY:

We hope you enjoy the posts from the Crosswinds free email list (see cwer.org for details of how to join). Mike worked hard to keep the list current on the progress of the 3 mustangs.

Ennapay's injury August 2009 update: Dr Monfort of Farmer City IL was able to see Ennapay for us this week, as a 3rd opinion on her pain problems. He and his team immediately spotted, diagnosed, and pointed out for us that her last rib on her right side is fractured and misshapen. This will take time to heal and she is to have no work other than pasture time at least until summer 2010.
Notice the odd shaped marks on her side, that appear to go into the muscle? We'd assumed it was an old muscular injury as we've seen on other horses. Dr. Monfort showed us that it wasn't, it was this rib injury. We can't know if all the other treatments really did anything for other issues Ennapay could've had.
September 2009 update: We couldn't be happier! Ennapay is going home to join Miata and their family! They will allow Ennapay a long "semi-retirement" until her rib fully heals, then ease her back into work with their son as he "boy" and life long partner! CONGRATS ALL!!!

Sponsorship:  Ennapay now needs a feed sponsor. The feed sponsor donates to cover the cost of her feed monthly -- $35 per month at this time.

She also needs a medical sponsor. Recent expenses since the contest included sand treatment, a month of ulcer medications, and 2 herbals in efforts to resolve her belly issues. Estimated total to date since contest, $350.
