Ema
(aka Emily)

Summary: Ema was
a pmu mare, adopted from a pmu rescue in spring '04. She had
some basic ground training and was doing great at her new home,
but unfortunately her new dad had sudden serious health
problems, and they chose to donate Ema to us, to help finish
getting her life on a better path. Ema developed rapidly into a
real joy to ride. Ema has been adopted by a wonderful loving mom
who is getting back into horses after a long time away, and
we're confident they will do great together.
August 2004: Emily ("Ema") arrived yesterday from a wonderful home
in western IL. She had been a PMU "pee line" mare, producing urine to
be collected for the production of Premarin and other female hormones. As that
business has been cut back hard, many of these mares were let go to find new
lives, or, sadly, to die at slaughter for French Cuisine. A wonderful lady
adopted Ema in February, and has spent a lot of time and money on her, including
a professional trainer to work on her ground manners. Unfortunately, due to
emergency health issues in her family, she was no longer sure how much longer
she could provide Ema a stable home. Rather than wait until the last minute and
then try to sell her and risk her ending up in the wrong situation, she chose to
send her to us.
Ema has driven long ago, we're told, and is good with her feet
and leads well and loads well. She is also very good about being tied. Ema's
trainer and mom made a lot of progress with this girl, and gave us a wonderful
foundation to work with. Emily is a bright-eye spirited girl, an unusual blonde
roan color that, along with her huge neck and her spirited personality, leads us
to believe she is likely part clydesdale.
We look forward to teaching Ema to ride, and helping her find a
forever home. At least so far, she appears to have the passion, the build, and
the physique much like Memphis Belle!
September 2, 2004 update: With
us just one week, Ema has settled in completely, is a joy to be around, and IS
STARTING TO RIDE! Above center photos are Ema's first session under saddle off a
lead rope. She did fantastic! They even rode outside the roundpen! We are really
excited about Ema's future, with such a great attitude, great build, great
personality. Ema has a great life ahead of her! We anticipate Ema being ready
for adoption as an intermediate rider's horse - ready for trails, the ring and
more, essentially immediately!
December 04 update:
An adoption was in process for Ema to go to Texas to be with Memphis', owned by
Memphis' mom's best friend! Unfortunately, a severe knee injury has changed
Lynda's plans, and Ema is again available for adoption.
Ema is riding nicely at the
walk, trot and canter. We are doing exploring rides in the
fields, and she handles herself well. She is still working on
her balance, especially at a canter. She is reasonable with her
feet, but not great, and is still not great about loading onto
the trailer. These are all skills we continue to work on as the
weather permits.
March 05 update:
A new adoption application has been accepted for Ema, and we
look forward to receiving her contract and deposit, which will
make her adoption officially in process! We will then set an
anticipated delivery date.
In the mean time, Gerry and
Ema continue to have a blast riding together! Ema has found her
gallop, and seems to enjoy doing so. They have done a 6 mile
ride together to a friend's house and back with several others,
and are generally having a grand time.
May 05 update:
Ema went home with her great new mom, Michelle T, this week! She
did wonderfully getting onto the trailer, and Michelle reports
an uneventful ride home. We cannot wait to hear updates and see
pics of Ema in her wonderful new home, and with her new brother,
Ransom!
